I don't have much time but I was happy to see a new development in the garden and wanted to share. I saw it last night, in fact.
I sunk a few Red La Soda potatoes into my potato tower a few weeks back and lo and behold if a green didn't emerge. Finally! I thought they'd be up sooner and when they didn't come up I thought surely I had killed them with neglect.
Soon after I bought them, I cut them into pieces and dusted them with sulfur. There they sat in a little tray, their cries to go underground unheard. I left them for days, then weeks. They were fairly shriveled by the time I remembered them. I put them in the disassembled "tower", the reminder of my failed sweet potatoes.
I watered the Red LaSodas and had my doubts. It seemed that every weed wanted to sprout in their stead but eventually, just last night, there was a potato green poking out of the soil! I do hope the other chunks sprout. It would be a sad affair if I ended up with one little corner of potatoes and nothing more.
In other news, our salad bed has reached its maximum output level. There is every sort of lettuce in there and it's ready to come out. We pick as needed but we're going to have to harvest it all soon and share. I'm afraid it will all bolt and get bitter with the warmer weather. It's been a good year for salad.
