It's been raining off and on for the past several days. It's a good thing, we need a little moisture in the ground. The only downside that I can see is that mushrooms are cropping up en masse in my winter garden beds. There are so many that when the neighbor girl came by to visit and saw our backyard for the first time, she exclaimed, "Oh my gosh, you guys grow mushrooms!"
We don't, I explained to her. I think it's the compost. I'm guessing that the compost and soil that I get from Natural Gardener, being organic, is not sterilized and is teeming with life. She then explained to me that you don't have to buy compost, you can make your own. I'm glad she knows that. I'm not even sure why but it's reassuring that someone under the age of 12 has some idea of what compost is.
What, praytell, do I do about the mushroom situation? Anybody? I pick them out gently so I can get the "root" which isn't much of a root at all. I've always been afraid of ingesting the wrong kind for fear of instant death. I have so much to do, so much planned for this years garden, I absolutely do not have time to die before it's all done. So I try my best to keep them in check but this weekend, the child was right, it looked like we were a couple of mushroom farmers.
